Dec 27, 2011

Did you get that new bowling ball that you wanted? Was it a plastic ball or one of the newer ones. Did you have it drilled conventional or finger tipped?  We do hope each of you had a great Christmas, and had some quality time to reflect, and to enjoy the time with your friends and family.
Don’t forget New Years Eve.  There will be a 7-8-9 doubles bowling tournament at Fast Lanes in Hoopeston. This means the 1st game if you get 7 or more pins, it counts as a strike, 2nd game, 8 or more, and the 3rd game, 9 or more pins count as a strike. Very similar to no tap, but with a slight twist. Tournament is scheduled to start at 7pm.
The Warrick Ford Open is Sunday Jan 15 at 10:00, Illinois time at Sycamore Lanes in Covington. Great way to start the new year.

Dec 6, 2011

Before we get to the heart of the column this week, the accomplishments of our area bowlers, I need to make a short observation.  I have received a few comments about portions of this column becoming boring. I am speaking of where I have been talking about the technical stuff, like ball specifications or parameters, so I will discontinue that, and go back to an actual rule of the week.  I guess it is always good to refresh your memory once in a while. So, look towards the bottom of each article to see if you remember the rule of the week. Oh, if you have a funny story about one of your bowling experience’s that you would like to share, send it to me.
A report from the Tuesday Morning league tells us that Michelle Huber picked up the 6-7-10 split. The Tuesday Nite Go-Getters really did not have a lot of big scores, but these people are really picking up their spares by converting some good splits.  In the last 2 weeks, Cheryl Rhoton picked up the 3-10 twice, and Terry Moreman picked up the 3-10, 5-10, 2-4-10 and the 5-6. Fred Fultz picked up both the 7-9 and the 5-6. Jon Castle grabbed the 2-4-8-10. Steve Lamb was not satisfied until he showed he could pick up the 3-4-6-7-10. His dad, Dick Lamb converted the 5-7. Paula Beatty picked up the 5-8-10 while Mac McDaniel showed how to pick up the 4-5-7-8. The Senior League reports that Bob Beck was tearing up the lanes. He was 149 pins over his series average with games of 233, 181, and finished off with a 209 for a 623 series. Congrats to Sandy West for bowling her 1st 200 game over, and 73 pins over her average. John Ramsey was 53 pins over his average with a 234, while Harvey Miller out did his average by 58 pins. Karen Beck picked up both the 5-6, and the 5-10. Shirley Miller knocked off the 3-9-10.
In the Alternate Saturday Night Mixed League, Terry Bell was also on a hot steak, rolling games of 239, 225 and 221 for a 685 series. The 239 game was 54 pins over his 185 average.
Check these scores out from the Monday Nite Church No Tap league:  Sharon Craft was 62 pins over her 194 average with a 256. Robbie Ketcherside, rolled a 759 series which included a game of 274, 72 pins over his 202 average. Scott Cunningham was right behind him with a 688. Yvonne Scruggs not only rolled 51 pins over her 179 average for a game total of 230, but she also picked the 4-8-10 split. Not to be left out though, Richard Morgan picked up the 5-10, not once, but twice.
There was rumor floating around last week that the Wednesday morning league was folding. Even though they need both new teams and bowlers, they are continuing.
Let’s get back to our rule of the week.
AWARDS:
Rule 50. Eligibility
USBC will recognize the achievements listed in this chapter bowled by USBC members participating in USBC leagues and tournaments. To qualify for recognition all provisions of the USBC Bylaws, specifications and rules must have been complied with at the time the score was bowled. (See Rule 100a and Rule 300b.) USBC High Score Awards designated with an (*) cannot be earned while pre or post bowling unopposed. Scores are determined on a scratch basis.
NOTE:  A frame by frame print out of the score sheet must be provided with all Award Applications submitted from a modified format.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Nov 29, 2011

How’s your turkey supply coming along?  Making noodles with it yet, maybe pot pies. Oh I know, making those cold turkey sandwiches.  I hope you had a great holiday, and we are now all looking forward to the Christmas holiday only 27 days away.
A rather quiet week, seems like everyone was preoccupied with Thanksgiving preparations, but we do have a few items to report
First off, Warrick Motors sponsored yet another tourney, this time in Cissna Park. Bowlers from both the Danville and Hoopeston area participated.
Charlie Varner was the high side leader after qualifying with a 239 for 4 games. Robin Turner was the low side qualifier averaging 224, also for 4 games.  All that being said, Derrick Hufford rolled a 805 series to capture the tournament title.
Don’t want to forget to let you all know about 15 year old Blake Norwell. Blake is one of our youth bowlers at Lincoln Lanes on Saturday mornings, and he bowled 10 strikes in a row on Nov 19, and ended out his 10th frame with a 3 hit and a spare, for a grand total of 283!  Way to go Blake!!
No reports from the Tuesday Morning, Go Getters or Karaoke Leagues this week, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but am sure they will be back up and rolling very soon. Senior League reports that
Karen Beck was 75 pins over average with a 213 game;  Bob Coburn 59 pins over his game average;  Shirley Lamm 51 pins over her game average.  ;. The following split conversions were made: Jack Ball, Greg Miller and Steve Newell the 5-10.   Judy Gebhart the 4-7-10.  Betty Lierman, Bob Coburn and Hank Biczkowski, the 5-7. Laura Baird converted two split combinations.  The 4-5-7, and the 5-6-10. Concluding this week’s reports with the Monday Nite Church No Tap league: Karen Hoskins had high score for the ladies this week, bowling a 251.  That was 75 pins over her 176 average. Other No-Tap bowlers getting 50 or more pins over average were Brock Dieu a 187 bowler, topping his average by 58 pins to reach a 245 game. JR Scruggs rolled 56 pins over his 206 average for a 263. Krystle Frazier bowled a 222, 77 pins over her 145 average. Barbara Weaver, a 160 bowler, topped her average by 51 pins to capture a 211. Brad Wheeler rolled 51 pins over his 155 average for a 206, Leean Palmer scored a 182 62 pins over 120. Karen Lane topped out the evening by outdoing her 118 average by 58 pins, ending up with a 176. Dieu also picked up the 2-6-7-10 split.
I was down at the center this past week, bowling as a sub, and was advised they still have room for 2 more teams. It is a Church league, so why not see if you can get some other folks from Church, and maybe you can bowl on Monday nites at 6:30, at Lincoln Lanes, in the annex. It is a mixed league, does not make any difference how many of each gender you have, in fact, the team can even be all male or all female. It is a non sanctioned league and are there to just have fun. Tell ‘em Tuck sent you.
Let’s get back to our rule of the week. We have been talking about ball specifications.
Plugs and Designs
1.  Ball plug may be used for the purpose of redrilling a ball. A slug may only be used in place of plugging a thumb or finger hole. The hole drilled through the slug must be complete, leaving no void at the base of the slug.
2.  In all cases, there shall be no interior voids.
3. Plugs and designs must be made of material similar to, although not exactly the same as, the original material out of which the ball was made. Plugs and designs must comply with other specifications of a bowling ball.
4.  No foreign material may be placed on the outer surface of the ball or in the weight hole, including but not limited to tape, paint, or whiteout.
5. Density may not exceed 1.5 g/mL
Next week, we will talk about 2 handed ball delivery.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

A new kid is on the block. Jesse Alvarez rolled his very 1st 300 game this past Thursday night in the Lutheran League. He had posted his achievement on Facebook as soon as it happened, and living as close as your columnist does to the center, he was there within 10 minutes to talk with the new 300 club member. Jesse has rolled 4 289 games, but of course this is his highlight.  I understand he is already looking at various 300 rings, but his wife Rachel made it clear that it would not replace his wedding ring. In other “300” action, Derrick Hufford rolled his 3rd 300 game of the season last Tuesday nite at Lincoln Lanes.
The Tuesday Morning Ladies League at the Westville Legion reports that Sandy Stephenson picked up the 6-7-10 while Sandy Taylor picked up the 4-5-7 and the 4-5-7-10. They also inform me that are in need of 2 or 3 more bowlers. In the Senior League, Keith Carter bowled 66 pins over his game average while Sandy West bowled 50 pins over her game average. Splits were plentiful:  Joe Blagg, 4-10;  Linda Engle, 3-10;  Ernie Harvey, 5-6; Martha Elliott, 5-7; John Gebhart Laura Baird, 5-10; Ernie Harvey, 5-6;  and Judy Gebhart, 3-6-7-10. In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, things were rolling right along. Houston Key, who was celebrating his birthday that night rolled a 230, 66 pins over his average. Deb Miller topped out at 166, 57 pins over. Tracy Smith had a great game of 225, 59 pins above his average. Melissa Castle bowled a 189 game, 65 pins over her average which helped total a 510 series, 138 pins over her series average. Martha Elliott fell short of a 200 game by 1 pin, totaling 59 pins over her game average. Mac McDaniel picked up the4-5, while Irv Summers converted the 2-5-7.   Nite Church No Tap league Take a look at these scores in the Church No-Tap league: Robbie Ketcherside rolled a 277, 77 pins over his 200 average, plus he totaled out with a 693 series. Drilling Specifications
Holes
The following limitations shall govern the drilling of holes in the ball:
1.  Holes or indentations for gripping purposes shall not exceed five and shall be limited to one for each finger and one for the thumb, all for the same hand. The player is not required to use all the holes in any specific delivery, but they must be able to demonstrate, with the same hand, that each hole can be used simultaneously for gripping purposes. Any hole that cannot be reasonably shown to be used with a single hand would be classified as a balance hole.
2.  One hole for balance purposes not to exceed 1¼ inches in diameter. This hole may not exceed 1¼ inches at any point through the depth of the hole.
3. No more than one vent hole to each finger and/or thumb hole not to exceed ¼ inch in diameter. USBC considers a vent hole to be any non-gripping hole that intersects with a gripping hole at any depth. Any hole intended for use as a balance hole that intersects with a gripping hole will instantly be considered a vent hole. This hole may not exceed ¼ inch at any point throughout the depth of the hole.
4.  One mill hole for inspection purposes not to exceed 5/8 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch in depth.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Rich McFarland is in the news again. We received word that he rolled his 13th perfect game recently in the Midwest Electric League at Bulan’s.
On Oct 16th, the Warrick Ford Open Bowling Tournament cruised into Fast Lanes bowling center in Hoopeston. Following a 4 game qualifying round, the field was cut to 5 on the 195 and below average and 196 and above for match play. In game 1, it was #4 Doug Wagoner defeating Tyler Gutterage by a 203-190 score. In match 2, Aaron Gress defeated Wagoner 192-182. Gress then found Patti Lowe too hot to handle, when she defeated him169-167. Next up for Lowe was top seeded Eric Scheer. Lowe advanced to the finals with a 210 over a 187 score.
On the high side, Charlie Varner defeated Kyle Serrat 225-214 to meet Brandon Hamilton. Varner also won this match 228-193. Number 2 seeded Scott Kopatz woul then defeat Varner 220-186. Top seed Jason Turner, who has been inactive due to a serious illness over the summer, won 237-205. Turner then met Lowe in a final showdown for the top spot, and he outlasted Lowe 220-161. Fast Lanes thanks everyone who participated in the tournament, as well as Warrick Ford for their support.
The Wednesday Morning DNA Karaoke League reports that Sandy Cunningham bowled a 199 game, which is 81 pins over her average of 118.  Ann Minnette bowled a 205 which is 60 pins over her average of 146. In the Senior League, Hank Biczkowski bowled a 175 which is 54 pins over his game avg.  The only splits reported were Bill McDaniel with the pick up of the 5-7, 4-5, and the 2-7. Barb Smith snagged the 4-5, Laura Baird picked up the 8-9, and Rose Newell converted the 5-10.Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Charlie Tiffin was on a roll again, bowling a 222, 94 pins over his game average. Houston Key bowled a 234, 72 pins over. Jon Castle and Fred Fultz both picked up the 3-10, while Irvin Summers and Castle corralled the 5-10. Terry Moreman picked off the 9-10, and Laura Baird converted the 4-5.  A new league is reporting this week. The Alternate Saturday Night Mixed League reports that Rich Miller was   54 pins over average 172  for a 226, while Ellen Baker  scored 58 pins  over her 135 average with a game of 193. Miller picked up the 5-10 split, while Dewey McClain converted the 2-4-10. Concluding this week’s reports with the Monday Nite Church No Tap league JR Scruggs had a haunting score of 290, 81 pins over his 209 average.  Mike Jett had a 243, 59 pins over his 184 average, while Shirley Perryman rolled a 218, 54 pins over her 164 average. Tuck Miller accidentally dropped the ball on approach, and it rolled backwards. No one was hurt.
Let’s get back to our rule of the week. We have been talking about ball specifications.

1.  They do not affect the hardness of the ball
2. They are totally removed from the ball before

Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

The 75th annual Women’s City Tournament will be held at Bulan’s Bowl on Sunday Nov 6, at 11am. Entry forms can be obtained at both Bulan’s and Lincoln Lanes.
I know of at least 10 area senior bowlers that will be competing in this year’s state tournament in Elgin on Nov 12 and Nov 13 at Elgin Lanes.  It consists of singles and doubles competition.
Still looking for a league to join? Look no further, as the Monday nite Church No-Tap league is looking for about 2 more teams. They bowl each Monday at 6:30pm in the Lincoln Lanes Annex.
The Ladies League at the Westville Legion’s bowling center had Nicole Waterman picking up the 5-7 split last Tuesday morning. In the Senior League, Stan Harvey rolled 56 pins over his game average, and Donna Berlin picked up the 5-10 split. Phil Stultz converted the 5-6-10, while Martha Elliott knocked out the 7-8.
Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Charlie Tiffin rolled 81 pins over his average with a 206. Need the 3-10 split picked up, well, don’t call Ghostbusters, call Mac McDaniel as he converted that split twice while Gerald Arnett picked it up once. Houston Key picked up the 5-7-9. Concluding this week’s reports with the Monday Nite Church No Tap league Mike Jett rolled a high of 276, which was 96 pins over his 180 average. He had some strong competition though, Sue Strong that is, 265 and a 251 to help her attain a 709 series. Other bowlers were Joe Davis who topped out with a 270, 69 pins over his 201 average. Terry Jones was 96 pins over his 178 average with a 234, while Brad Wheeler totaled 83 over 139 for a 222. Lynnse Gondzur rolled 70 pins over their 132 average with a 202, while Karen Lane garnered a 176. She has a 114 average, so she rolled 62 pins over.
Let’s get back to our rule of the week. We have been talking about ball specifications.
SURFACE: The surface of the ball shall be free of all depressions or grooves of specific pattern, except for holes or indentations used for gripping the ball, identification lettering and numbers, and incidental chipping or marking caused by wear. Engraved pictures, logos, and/or designs from the manufacturer are not considered grooves of specific pattern. No foreign material may be placed on the outer surface of the ball. If the surface friction of the ball is altered by sanding or polishing, the entire surface of the ball must be sanded or polished in the same manner. Plugs, grips, and/or tape may not extend beyond the surface of the ball.
WEIGHT: The weight of the ball shall not exceed 16.00 pounds. There is no minimum weight.
HARDNESS: 1.  The surface hardness of bowling balls shall not be less than 72 (measured with Shore
durometer, type D) at room temperature (68-78 degrees Fahrenheit).
2.  The use of chemicals, or other methods, to change the hardness of the surface of the ball after it is manufactured is prohibited.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

How many of us dream of bowling a perfect game once in our lifetimes. There have of course been many of us who have, but there also have been many who have rolled multiple perfect games. Derrick Hufford rolled his 1st perfect game on Tuesday Oct 11 at the Lincoln Lanes Annex, and then, only 5 days later at the Warrick Ford Open in Hoopeston, he bowled his 2nd perfect game. Way to go Derrick. I guess the rest of us can continue to dream. On October 9th, Darren Van Duyn rolled a 300 game at Sycamore Lanes in Covington, but was even unstoppable for the next 8 frames where he left the dreaded 7 pin. He ended up with a 269 for a 749 series. Van Duyn rolled the 2nd 300 game this year at Sycamore, while Adam Pickett rolled the 1st earlier in the season. Wednesday, Oct 19th was a great day for Kyle Sirratt when he shot a 300 game. On Tuesday nite in the Lincoln Lanes Annex, Kevin O’Brien rolled a fantastic 834 series. These are the type of scores I love to report on. More on this at the end of the column.
The Ladies League at the Westville Legion’s bowling center had Glenda Brown rolling a 235, 94 pins over her 141 average. Wilma Pollman picked up the 2-7-8, and Phyllis Rutan converted the 5-6-10.  In the Senior League, John Ramsey, a 181 bowler rolled a 234, 53 pins over his average and another 231, 50 over. Add a 210 game, and he rolled an impressive 675 series, 132 pins over series average. Fred Fultz rolled 67 pins over his 133 average, by bowling his 1st 200 game. Tuck Miller 63 pins over game avg. with a 214. In the split category Shirley Miller and Terry Moreman picked up the 3-9-10.  Judy Gebhart the 5-10 and the 5-6-10.  Fultz picked up the 4-5-7.
Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Tony Dompe, a 185 average bowler, rolled a high series of 721, 121 pins over his series average with games of 265, 80 over, and a 259, 74 pins over his average. Melissa Castle rolled a434 series which is 80 pins over her average. Martha Elliott was 93 pins over her series average with a 507 series, and once again, Steve Lamb makes the paper bowling a 534, 99 pins over series average, while topping out with a 217 game, 72 pins over his game average. Split conversions consisted of Joe Elliott and Irv Summers picking up the 5-7, Chris Brookins the 5-10, Dot McDaniel, the 5-6, and Kevin Powell with the 3-10. Last, but certainly not least, in the Monday Nite Church No Tap league Sue Strong rolled a 263 to complete a 684 series.  Bowlers who rolled more than 50 pins over their averages were Scott Cunningham, who rolled a 262, 61 pins over his 200 average.  Finas Glenn rolled 57 pins over his 186 average for a 243. Richard Davis topped out a 239, 52 pins over, Terry Jones also bowled 52 over his 173 average for a 225, and lastly Stephanie Scruggs game total was a 225 as well as she bowled 51 pins over her 174 average.
I do appreciate the reports we received from a few more leagues this week. This column is about area bowlers and their achievements.  I am seeking what the news media calls stringers. Stringers are people who can report on activity within their own area.  Here is what I am asking, if your league is not being reported, I am asking that you, as a bowler in that league, submit a report for them. Send me an e-mail at the address located at the bottom of this column if interested and I will reply with all the particulars that I am wanting.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Oct 18, 2011

Last week it was reported that JR Scruggs rolled a 300 game in the Monday Nite Church No Tap League. What we did not know, is that 11 of the strikes were actual strikes, and not 9 counts. On the 12th ball of the game, he had a solid hit, with the 7 pin heading to knock the 10 pin down, but barely missed. Oh, so close.  Scruggs kept up his bowling this past week as well by rolling a 280.  Other No tap action includes Sue Strong throwing a 268, and Karen Hoskins, a 263. Jeremy Randolph rolled a 751 series, Scott Cunningham a 705, and Jimmy Scruggs a 704. The league had several bowlers who topped out 50 or more pins over their averages, including Scott Cunningham, a 192 average bowler, 51 pins over, with a 273. JR Scruggs was 71 pins over his 209 average with the 280 game. Jimmy Scruggs, 65 over his 200 average, and Karen Hoskins, 94 over 169, giving her a total of 263. Terry Jones rolled 61 pins over a 164 average to hit 225, Jeff Lane was 57 over 175, giving him a 232, and Leean Palmer threw 67 pins over her 106 average for a 173.  Sharon Craft knew how to deal with the splits this past week, by converting two of them, the 4-7-9 and the 3-7-10.
The Ladies League at the Westville Legion’s bowling center had Martha Hance picking up the 5-6, while both Wilma Pollman, and Laura Baird converted the 4-7-8.  In the Senior League, Baird was not finished picking up spares in her Tuesday morning league, she continued on Thursday afternoon picking up the5-10, and the 5-6. In other Senior League action Joe Stokes was 60 pins over game avg., Jack Ball 52 pins; Margo Johnson 56 pins over; Larry Thomas 54 pins over; and Bob Coburn was 74 pins over his game avg. of 120.  Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Dot McDaniel picked up the 3-10, not once, not twice, but 3 times. Not to feel guilty, she “let” Tracy Smith and Gerald Arnett pick up the same split. Tuck Miller slipped and accidentally picked up the 2-4-10, and the 2-5-7, and Sherry Castongue converted the 2-7. Lacee Bays rolled 65 pins over her average, but Steve Lamb was steaming again this week rolling 143 pins over his series average with a high game of 226, 89 pins over his 137 average. Last, but certainly not least, in the Wednesday morning DNA Karaoke League Marilyn Ruffner picked up the 3,9, 10 split.
Continuing with rule review, we will talk about bowling ball specifications. I bet some of you thought you could just use any size or weight…wrong.  We will cover specifics of the bowling ball and more in the coming weeks.
Any bowling ball used in USBC certified competition must be approved and identifiable as a ball listed in the “approved bowling ball” list located on the Equipment Specifications page on www.BOWL.com. Additionally, for identification purposes, each ball must have some form of serial number (this may be engraved or re-engraved by the bowler); the ball’s original brand and product name logos must be engraved on each ball. No additional logos or designs may be added to a previously-approved ball without approval from the USBC.
Since all bowling balls manufactured prior to the creation of the ball list (January 1991) have been previously approved, the acceptance of the balls is at the discretion of the tournament director and/or league official.
Material
1.       The ball shall be constructed of solid material i.e., no liquids and without voids in its interior.
2.       Any material added to or included in the coverstock shall be equally distributed throughout the entire coverstock of the ball, except for materials used in logos and other required markings.
3.       The density of any piece/component in a ball (e.g. core, coverstock, weight block, etc.) shall not exceed 3.80 g/mL (i.e., no pure metals or high density materials).
Following approval of the ball, the introduction of substances that are not comparable to the original material used in manufacturing of a bowling ball is prohibited. Likewise, altering a bowling ball in any way so as to increase its weight or cause it to be off balance outside the specifications is prohibited.

Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Oct 11, 2011

Yes, I know it’s no-tap, but it is still an accomplishment. JR Scruggs rolled a no-tap 300. Remember, a no tap consists of bowling all 10 frames with at least a 9 count. The 10th frame means you have to bowl 3, 9 count balls.  Now, that is hard to do. A fraction of an inch to either side…..well, you could leave a mess.
Not only did Scruggs roll a 300 game, but he also rolled a 676 series.  Other Monday nite no-tap action included Sue Strong bowling a 631 series. The following bowlers rolled 50 or more pins over their averages: Scruggs 300, 111 over his 189 average. Scott Cunningham 244, 58 pins over his 186, Joe Davis 243, 58 over his 185, Barbara Weaver 246, 89 pins over a 157, Kenny Smith 230, 65 pins over 165, Steve Newell 217, 62 over 155, and Leean Palmer 156, 58 pins over her 98 average.    The Ladies League at the Westville Legion’s bowling center had Sandy Stephenson picking up the 4-7-10.  In the Senior League, Barb Smith; Linda Engle the 5-7.  Dot McDaniel and Marion Johnson the 5-10. John Gebhart; the 5-6-10,  Rose Newell; the 2-7-8 and Steve Newell, the 5-7 and the 5-7-8.  Ruth Campbell picked up the 4-5, Jan Frank the 5-8-10, Tuck Miller the 5-4-7, and Ernie Harvey picked up the same, not once, but twice. In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Maggie Birge picked up the 4-9, while Mac McDaniel and Jon Castle converted the 3-10..
In other bowling action, The Tuesday Nite Go-Getters report that Tracy Smith rolled 51 pins over his average with a 222. McDaniel was 72 pins over his average with a 213. Kevin Powell bowled 54 pins over his average for a 204.
The Senior League’s John Ramsey was 56 pins over with a 236, Bob Beck was 57 pins over with a 211 and Bill McDaniel was 65 pins over avg. with a 192.  Talking with McDaniel after his 2 great appearances this past week, we asked him what he was doing differently. New ball. We wish him all the luck. Well, maybe not this week, as we have to bowl his team in 2 different leagues. Good luck Bill!!

Continuing with rule review, let’s go back to 113a
·         When there is a tie for the league championship, can a league adopt a rule stating total pins for the season will break the tie?
No, according to the information located in Rule 113a (note box), total pins for the season cannot be used to break a tie for any place in the position standings. A league may adopt a rule to allow for co-champions, thus eliminating the need for a playoff, but not one that would use total pins. Position standings are determined on the basis of games or points won during the season in actual competition. Rule 113a, Item 1 states, a tie for first place must be decided with a playoff unless the rules allow for co-champions. Rule 113a, Item 4, provides a playoff must be conducted when a league decides to break a tie for any other position.
The difficulty involved in basing team standings on total pins can be illustrated by checking almost any league standing sheet. Frequently, a team in fifth or sixth place will have a larger total pin count than the team in third, second, maybe even first place. Usually prize money for any other tied place is combined and divided equally between the tied teams. If there are trophies involved, or if a league finds it necessary to break a tie for some other reason, a playoff must be held unless the rules allow for co-champions.
113a/3
·         The two teams tied for the first half championship don’t want to have a special roll-off. They would like to use the games from the next time they are paired against each other for the roll-off and the regular match. Can they do this?
No, there is no provision in USBC rules to allow scores to be used for more than one league session
Please submit all reports before midnight on Sundays. If you need any more info, drop me a note at illianabowling@gmail.com.
On a closing note, my apologies for missing my deadline last Monday evening for inclusion in Tuesday’s paper. I guess I had one of those ‘senior” moments. Thanks to the CN for inserting it on Wednesday.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Oct 4, 2011

First things first.  In Life, you have to be able to laugh at yourself. This is one of those times.  On Thursday, Sept 29, 2011, at about 1pm, on the very 1st ball, the very 1st frame, of the very 1st game, I rolled a “gutter” ball”. It wasn’t the 1st time, and it probably will not be the last.  Of course it was announced over the PA system at the center, so the afternoon was off to a great start. My fellow league players told me, I bet that won’t show up in your column.
The Ladies League at the Westville Legion’s bowling center had Shirley Lamm picking up the 4-5-7.  She obviously was not done yet, as on Thursday afternoon in the Senior League, she also converted the 5-8-10, and the 5-10. Other split conversions in the Senior League were Keith Carter, Greg Miller, and Karen Beck, all with the 5-10. Beck also picked up the9-10. Shirley Reynolds converted the 6-7-10, while Tuck Miller showed how to pick up both the 5-6, and the 2-10. In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Maggie Birge and Houston Key picked up the 3-10.  They like keeping it in the family. Sherry Castongue converted the 2-7.
In other bowling action, The Tuesday Nite Go-Getters report that Charlie Tiffin, a 114 average bowler, rolled a 167 game, 53 pins over his average, while bowling a 461, 119 over his series average. Martha Elliot was 67 pins over her 132 average with a 199, and that helped to get her 97 pins over her series average.
In the Wednesday morning DNA Karaoke League, Susan O'Herron rolled a 193 with a 126 average, 66 pins over her average.
The Senior League Bob Beck had a 212, 62 pins over his 150 game average; Jack Taylor rolled a 211, 58 pins over his game average of 153. Harvey Miller, a 123 average bowler, and Keith Carter, a 155 bowler, both rolled 53 pins above.
The Monday Nite No-Tap league is telling us that the following bowlers were more than 50 pins over their averages. They were Sharon Craft-236-181=54, Sue Strong-276-225=51, Mike Jett-235-168=67, J R Scruggs-228-167=61 and Albert Syass-230-176=54. Strong rolled a game of 276, and a series of 651. Sharon Craft topped out with a 655 series.
Continuing with rule review, let’s go to 113b/1
113b/1
What average and handicap are used in a playoff?
Unless otherwise provided by league rules, the players involved use their average and handicap as of the date the playoff is bowled. For example, if a league bowls a split season, and the playoff for the first half is not bowled until after three weeks into the second half, the average and handicap for the playoff includes all the games already bowled in the second half.
113b/2
What happens if there is a three-way tie for first place or a trophy position?
Total pins from the playoff will determine the winner unless otherwise provided in league rules. Four adjoining lanes would be used, starting lanes would be selected by draw, and teams would rotate after each game as follows:

Sep 27, 2011

Some good scores in bowling this week. Maggie Birge rolled 178 pins over her series average this week with a 577. Her game average is a 133.  Some of the bowlers have figured out how to get higher scores in the Go Getters, and that’s to bowl against the Wolf Creek team. Last week it was Gary Holycross with his 673, and now Birge with the 577.  Wonder who will be next? Jon Castle picked up the 3-10 split, and Terry Moreman snagged the 2-5-10.
In the Senior League, Keith Carter once again makes the headlines with 58 pins over his 148 average with a total of 123 pins over his series average. Jim Thomas was very close, as he also rolled 58 pins over his 153 average and ended up bowling 109 pins over his series average. Judy Gebhart, a 139 average bowler, rolled 52 pins over with a 191. In the split category, Judy Arnett, Steve Newell, Rose Newell, and Harvey Miller picked up the 5-10, John Ramsey converted the 5-7, and Les Taylor, picked up the 4-5-7. Also, Shirley Lamm snagged the 3-10, Bill McDaniel, the3-6-8-10 and Tuck Miller, the 6-7-10.
In the Church No-Tap League, Sue Strong rolled a 267, with a 678 series. Strong’s 267 was 63 pins over her 204 average. Richard Morgan rolled a 676 series, which included a 231, 57 pins over his 174 average. Robbie Ketcherside  had a 241, with a 182 average, totaling 59 pins over his average. Joe William was 61 pins over his 160 average with a 221. Scott Cunningham, a 165 bowler, rolled a 217, 52 pins over, Miles Clark had a 219, 83 pins over his 136 average. Larry Craft rolled 69 pins over his 140 average for a 209, and Karen Lane topped out with a 171, with 59 pins over her 112 average. Jimmy Scruggs picked up the 2-10.
Continuing with rule review, let’s go to 113b. Procedures (Playoffs and special contests)
A playoff may not consist of less than 1 frame, scored like a 10th frame.
1.       The following procedures apply, unless the league rules state otherwise.
a)      Playoffs are conducted under the same rules governing league play during the regular season.
b)      Handicap is figured as of the date/time the games are bowled. All games bowled prior to the playoff are included in determining handicap.
c)       When more than two teams are involved in a playoff, total pins from the playoff shall decide the winner.
d)      If a tie exists at the end of a playoff, each team bowls and additional 10th frame until the tie is broken.
e)       Games do not count toward individual averages or special league prizes.
2.          The League secretary arranges to have lanes available.
Please submit all reports before midnight on Sundays. If you need any more info, drop me a note at illianabowling@gmail.com.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Sep 20, 2011

In over 11 years of bowling, Gary Holycross, a Tuesday Nite Go-Getter bowler, had never bowled a 600 or higher series. That was until Tuesday, September 13, when he rolled a spectacular 673 at Lincoln Lanes, with games of 234, 234, and a 205. The bad part was, he bowled our team. Good job Gary. In other Go Getter action, Tara Holler rolled a 203, 87 pins over her 116 average. Bowling 69 pins over their 137 average was Chris Brookins with a 206 game. In the previous week, Jon Castle rolled a 236, which was 81 pins over his 2010/2011 season average. Split pickups for the Go-Getters were Jon Castle 7-9, Gerald Arnett 3-6-7-10, Mac McDaniel  5-7, and both Fred Fultz and Irvin Summers with the 5-10.
In the Tuesday morning Ladies League at the Legion in Westville, Barb Smith converted the 5-7, while Marilyn Ruffner of the DNA Karaoke League picked up the other side, with the 5-10.
In the Senior League’s 9-8 session, Shirley Lamm was 51 pins over her 136 average with a 187, and Bill McDaniel rolled a 203, 68 pins over his 135 average. Split pickups for the Senior League included Karen Beck 4-5-7, Jan Frank  and Les Taylor with the 5-10, Harvey Miller, 3-9-10, Stan Harvey 2-10, and Keith Carter with the 3-7-10.
Located at Lincoln Lanes in the annex on Monday nites, is the Church No-Tap League.  Have no idea what no tap is. Basically, if you get 9 pins total bowled with the 1st ball in a frame, it counts as a strike.  Higher scores are expected in this league. Don’t be surprised if you see quite a number of 300 games from this league during the year. Because of this, the requirements are a bit more stringent for this particular league.  This last week, Jeremy Randolph had a 754 series, while JR Scruggs had a 676. Mike Jett was 50 pins over his 180 average with a 230. Split pickups were Robbie Ketcherside with the6-7-10, and Sue Strong with the 5-10. They advise they still need more bowlers/teams. They bowl at 6:30.
I understand there was a 300 game bowled recently at Fast Time Lanes in Hoopeston as well as a possible 7-10 pickup.  I need these reports from the league’s secretaries in order to publish. Covington and Hoopeston, we need to hear from you, and let’s not forget about Bulan’s.
Let’s review some rules.  For the next few weeks we will review Rule 113 and it’s subparts concerning playoffs and special contests.
    Rule 113a Definition:
A playoff is a separate competition conducted to determine league champions and/or break ties in the league standings. Unless league rules allow for co-champions a playoff must be conducted:
1.       To determine the champion when a tie exists for first place at the end of the league schedule;
2.       To determine a league champion when the league bowls a split season;
3.       To determine first place when a tie occurs in any segment of a split season;
4.       When the league decides to break a tie for any other position.
Scores bowled which qualify for USBC awards will be recognized.
NOTE:  Total pins for the season, segment or team average, cannot break position standing ties at the conclusion of the season, or at the end of any segment of a split season schedule.
Rule 113a/1 If the League rules state no substitutes will be permitted the final 2 weeks of the schedule, can a substitute be used in the playoff?
A playoff is not considered part of the last 2 weeks of the schedule.  If substitutes are permitted during the regular season, they would be acceptable as eligible players, unless a league rule specifically state that substitutes are not permitted in the playoffs.

Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Sep 6, 2011

Labor Day is now behind us, and with that, many of the Leagues are beginning to either have the kick off meetings or actually start league play.       The Monday nite No-Tap League will have their meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 at Lincoln Lanes in the front. This league normally bowls in the annex.
Once again, if you have not bowled in a while or have never bowled on a league, there are league’s looking for your participation.  For example, the Wednesday morning dNa Karaoke league is looking for bowlers, as is the Happy Go Go Lucky Saturday nite mixed league. For the Happy Go Lucky League contact Ruth at 217-918-0745. For the dNa Karaoke League, contact Marjorie at 217-442-2521. I saw that the Winter League, which bowls on Tuesday afternoons is also looking for some ladies to bowl. You can contact Judy Moreman at 217-446-3156 for more info.
As I asked last week, are there any men’s leagues or even mixed leagues in the area that bowl in the mornings?  I have had 1 bowler ask about this, as he now works 2nd shift.  If you know of one, please drop me a note at the e-mail near the end of this column.
The Senior League had some good scores to report for their 3rd week of bowling. Jan Frank was 51 pins over her game avg. of 134, Larry Thomas was 75 pins over his game avg. of 155  Bob Beck was 67 pins over his game avg. of 178, and Darlene Edwards was 67 pins over her game avg. of 110.The league did have a few split conversions, such as Barb Smith picking up both the 5-10 and the 4-7-10;  Sandy West, the 3-10;  Bob Maxwell the 2-7 and Joe Stokes the 5-7-8. Phil Stultz converted the 5-7, Jack Taylor knocked out the 9-10, and your columnist snared the 4-6 split. Very lucky I guess.
How many of you tried out the new site I suggested last week?  Bowlersalley.org is the place for you. You can add and edit your scores, and even keep archived leagues from previous years on there as well, and you can share your scores with others.  If you are now using it, please let me know, and I will follow you as well.
Your bowling averages are now up on the bowl.com site for the Danville area men and women bowlers.  This comes in handy when registering for an upcoming tourney.
I want to hear from ALL area centers this year, not just Lincoln Lanes and Bulans.  Covington, Hoopeston, Cissna Park and Paxton, you are all included.  League secretaries; please send me reports each and every week. Your bowlers would love to see their name in print.
Please submit all reports before midnight on Sundays. If you need any more info, drop me a note at illianabowling@gmail.com.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Aug 30, 2011

Things are starting to shape up fast now as leagues are starting to have more of their kick off meetings. Received notice on Sunday that the Monday nite No-Tap League will have their meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 at Lincoln Lanes in the front.
You can contact Judy Moreman at 217-446-3156 fo4r more info. Unfortunately, the Tuesday nite 332 league dissolved this past Tuesday nite as there were not enough teams to participate.
Are there any men’s leagues or even mixed leagues in the area that bowl in the mornings?  I have had 1 bowler ask about this, as he now works 2nd shift.  If you know of one, please drop me a note at the e-mail near the end of this column.
The Senior League had some good scores to report for their 2nd week of bowling. Last week they established their starting averages, and this time around, some bowled way over them. We don’t want to forget about Terry Koebrich, as the very 1st week he bowled 71 pins over his average from last year. In their last bowling session, Sandy West was 64 pins over game avg.; Judy Gebhart, 65 pins over game avg.; Ernie Harvey, 54 pins over game avg.; Joe Stokes, 81 pins over game avg.; Keith Carter, 73 pins over game avg. and 155 pins over series total; Joe Blagg, 53 pins over game avg.; Margo Johnson, 58 pins over game avg.; Judy Arnett, 89 pins over game avg and 140 pins over series total. The league did have a few split conversions, such as Bob Maxwell picking up the 5-10 split. Greg Miller converted the 6-9-10, Martha Elliott and Ernie Harvey both picked up the 4-5-7, and Judy Gebhart corralled the 5-7.
Foul rule reminder: If your foot crosses the foul line, or you touch something on the other side of the foul line, you receive no pin count for that ball….UNLESS, you hold on to the ball. If the ball has not left your hand, it is not a complete delivery, thus, not a foul. Question for you. You are bowling on lane 20, at Lincoln Lanes and after you deliver the ball down the lane, your hand touches the wall. Is that a foul?  Because it is located behind the foul line, no, it is not considered a foul.
Looking for a place to keep your scores online? Bowlersalley.org is the place for you. You can add and edit your scores, and even keep archived leagues from previous years on there as well, and you can share your scores with others.  I have used this place for about 4 years or so, and am very happy with it.

Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Aug 23, 2011

A bit slow this week, I guess many of the leagues are yet to start up, so we will simply fill you in on some info that you might like to use. Especially, if you are like me, and use the internet quite a lot.
Before I do that, the Senior League at Lincoln Lanes did bowl this past Thursday, and did report some split pickups. Bob Coburn converted the 2-5-10, Karen Beck snagged the5-6-10, John Gebhart corralled the 6-8-10, and Greg Miller blew away the 5-6.
Last week, I said that “baby” splits did not count. Basically those are the 3-10, and the 2-7.  Those are usually easy splits to pick up.  If the pins are directly across from each other like the 7-8, 8-9, 7-8, or even 9-10., they will count as good split pickups.
The Seniors were bowling last week to establish their starting averages, so nothing really “official”, but I do know that Karen Beck had a 139 ending average last year, and her 1st week consisted of 2 games, both over 200. Good job Karen.
As I stated, many leagues are just getting started, and are having their meetings within the next week or 2.  I do know that both the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, and the 332 league will be having theirs tonite (Tuesday) at Lincoln Lanes, at 6:30.
Now, for some of that internet info I promised you. Did you know that many of the area bowling centers have Face Book pages?  Yes, they do, and you can find them at the following:
Stop by these pages, and either “like” or join, and you be kept up to date on a lot of happenings at those centers.
Once again, I would encourage you to either call or stop by a bowling center near you and see if they need bowlers for this upcoming season.  It is a great way to get some exercise, and to meet new friends at the same time.
If you need any more info, drop me a note at illianabowling@gmail.com.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.

Hey folks, we’re back!!  I do believe our 1st year back with the weekly column went well, and we hope to improve on that this year with YOUR help. If you are a center owner, a league secretary, a team captain or even a team player, we need your input.
Center owners, please make sure your league secretaries get a copy of this column. Team captains and even team players, please do the same. League secretaries; please submit your weekly reports to me at illianabowling@gmail.com. Here is what I would like from each league:
1.       League name
2.       For the men:
·         Any scores over a 250, and any series over 675.
3.       For the women:
·         Any scores over 200, and any series over 625.
4.       Names of any bowlers who bowl 50 or more pins over their average, or 100 or pins over their series average. Please include their actual score, and their averages. This category should get quite a few names in print.
5.       Team captains, this is where you really can help.  If one of your team members converts a really good split, let us know. For example, the 7-10, or big 4 are really good splits.  A baby split, well, not so much. Also remember, if the head pin is standing, it is not a split.
A couple of weeks ago, I took a scenic drive up to Hoopeston, Cissna Park and Paxton, and dropped of some letters to the center to give out to the secretaries of each league.  Other teams from centers like Lincoln Lanes, Bulans, and Sycamore Lanes in Covington have reported previously, but we would like to see everyone participate once again, and would love to see new leagues reporting each week. Secretaries, please remember that your team members would love to see their names in print, and with your help, they can.
Also, we will give notice of not only upcoming tournaments, but the results as well.  For example, the State Senior Tournament will be held at Elgin Lanes in Elgin, Il and last year, we had quite a number of local bowlers finish in the money.
If you have not bowled in a while or have never bowled on a league, there are league’s looking for your participation. Both these leagues are located at Lincoln Lanes.  I do know the Senior League at Lincoln Lanes starts their bowling season this coming Thursday afternoon at 1pm.
Please submit all reports before midnight on Sundays.
If you need any more info, drop me a note at illianabowling@gmail.com.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.
