April 18, 2012

Where did the season go? It seems just like yesterday when the bowling season started, and here we are winding down. Time sure does fly when you are having fun.  The winter leagues start towards the end of August, and ends in the middle of April. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to submit a report for your league this past season, and look forward to working with you and even others who might want to help out and let us know what your league is doing. We will not be writing another column until the end of August, but you can keep up with us, by checking our blog located at http://tucksbowlingforfun.blogspot.com. At the blog site, you will be able to find past columns for the past 2 years. If you are in a summer league, feel free to submit a bowling report at illianabowling@gmail.com.  Please ask for what type of info I am looking for. This past week, I had the pleasure of bowling with some of the youth group from Danville’s First Assembly, one young lady in particular really seemed to enjoy the sport. Stormi might consider joining a youth league as her enthusiasm was very contagious.
The last couple of weeks we have been describing the duties of league officers. This week we will conclude with the Treasurer.
The Treasurer is responsible for:
·       Working with the president to open an account in the league name at an insured and recognized bank, credit union or in-house banking service, with at least two league officers’ signatures required for all withdrawals.  Account statements are mailed to the President for verification purposes.
·       Depositing funds in the league account within seven (7) days of receipt.
·       Working with the league president to verify the league’s account balance at least once per month.
·       Collecting league fees each session and paying the bowling center.
·       Issuing a check or money order made payable to the local association to cover membership dues.
·       Advising the league president and secretary if any league members are delinquent in paying league fees.
·       Providing each team with a detailed financial statement when the prize fund is distributed; including receipts, disbursements and transactions, and prize recipients’ names and earnings.
·       Distributing the prize fund within 21 days after the league schedule ends, unless the board or USBC decides otherwise.
·       Giving financial reports on request by the league president or board.
·       Turning over all league books, papers and monies to the next league treasurer. All financial records —regardless if in the possession of the former or current treasurer — must be retained for one (1) year after the league schedule ends.
We have 3 leagues reporting for our season’s finale. The Tuesday Morning Ladie’s League from the Westville Legion reports that recently Jo Ann Brooks picked up the 3-10 split, while Martha Hance converted the 2-9-10.
In Senior League bowling, Clara Copsy was 58 pins over her game average with a 182. Ernie Harvey was 58 pins over his game average, with a 239 game, while Ed Reed bowled 55 pins over his game average, with a 245 game. Mr. Excitement, Charlie Graul was 57 pins over his game average with a 190 game.  Covering the splits were Shirley Reynolds, Jim Thomas and Joe Davis, all of who picked up the 3-10 while Donna Berlin slapped down the 5-10.
The Monday nite No-Tap league has 2 reports to give you. The 1st will be from Monday, April 9, and then from Monday April 16th.
On April 9th:  3 men had series scores of 675 or higher. J.R. Scruggs, with a 695, Jeff Lane, with a 690, and Robbie Ketcherside, with a 681. Lane had a high game of 262, which is 81 pins over his 181 average. 194 average bowler Finas Glenn, topped out 53 pins over with a 247.  Krystle “Tutu” Evans rolled 61 pins over her 146 average for a 207, while Leean Palmer reached 202, 65 pins over her 137 average. We cannot forget that Louise Cunningham went above her 130 average by 63 pins to obtain a 193 game. Juanita Wrightsman and Glenn both converted the 5-7. In April 16th action, Jeremy Randolph once again make the column with a 724 series. Quite a few bowlers topped 50 or more pins over their averages, including Brad Wheeler who bowled 51 pins over for a 209. Jeff Lane topped his 183 average by 72 pins for a final score of 255. 198 average bowler Terry Jones reached 277, while knocking out 79 pins over his average.  Joe Davis, another tutu lover, topped out at 278, 61 pins over his 217 average. There is something about tutus in this league. Richard Davis had a 242, 78 pins over his 164 average. Larry Craft rolled a 218, 57 pins over his 161 average, and ending up with Nancy Goodner with a 228, which was 69 pins over her 157 average. Pam Jones picked up the 5-10 split.
Just a reminder that the Danville area Senior tournament will be held on April 28th and 29th. On the 28th, there will be 2 squad times, 10 am and 1pm, at Bulan Lanes. The final day on the 29th will be at 1pm at Lincoln Lanes. The top 5 bowlers will have a step ladder roll off to determine the winner. Entry forms are available at both centers. I will be there, will you?
This is the last column for this season. It has been a lot of fun, and we hope you have enjoyed reading it each week. Look for us again towards the end of August. In the mean time, you might see me at the bowling center or even walking down Vermilion St.
   Have a great summer.

April 10, 2012

Last week we were talking about election of officers. Each league usually elects new officers at season’s end, and many are begging for people to run for office. This week, I will cover the President, Vice President and the League Treasurer.
The president is the league’s chief executive.
The President/League Supervisor is responsible for:
·       Arranging an account to be opened in the league name at a federally insured and recognized bank, credit union or in-house banking service. The account must have at least two league officers’ signatures for all fund withdrawals. Account statements are sent to the president for verification purposes.
·       Scheduling league meetings at convenient times and locations.
·       Appointing committees.
·       Enforcing all league rules and USBC playing rules.
·       Verifying league accounts monthly. See the Monthly President Verification Worksheet in the Managing
League Funds section of this handbook.
·       May vote on all issues before the board.
In youth leagues that have a board, the president should assist the league supervisor with the duties of the president.
League Vice President
The vice president assumes the duties of the president in the president’s absence, and assists the president as requested.
In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, the year end roll off was held between the 1st half leader, Always Late, and the 2nd Half leader Wolf Creek. In a best of 3 match, with both games very close in score, Wolf Creek were the victors. Team members are, for Always Late, Margaret Birge, Bub Tiffin, Dot Tiffin, Charlie Tiffin, and Houston Keys. For Wolf Creek, team meam members include Martha Elliott, Laura Baird, Joe Elliott, and Greg Miller. Congrats to both teams! In the Senior League, Greg Miller seems to be our bowler of the week, where he rolled 84 pins over his average for a 256. Bill Reynolds was 51 pins over his game average, Linda Engle was 60 pins over her game average with a 191, and Jack Ball was 59 pins over his game average with a 204.  Ed Reed had a 202-236-226 for a 664 series.  Joe Davis was 63 over his game average with a 233, and 104 pins over his series total.  Jim Thomas converted the 5-6-10, Judy Arnett was able to split apart the 9-10, and Judy Gebhart knocked out the 3-10.
The Monday nite No-Tap league is reporting Jimmy Scruggs rolled 72 pins over average for a 278, which combined with his other game scores tallied a 700 even score. Shirley Perryman rolls a 250 game, 77 pins over her average.  Yvonne Scruggs had a great series of 647, which included a 240 game. Other bowlers rolling 50 or more pins over average were Brock Dieu, 84 over with a 266, Terry Jones, 60 over with a258, Nancy Goodner, a 211, 53 pins over, Essie Syass, 66 pins over average for a 197, and Lynnse Gondzur, 62 pins over average for a 196.
Looks as if next week will be the last column of this bowling season. I will give you more info then.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down. See you at the lanes.

April 3, 2012

As we stated last week, the bowling season for 2011/2012 is dwindling down. One sure sign of that is the annual Senior Tourney, which this year will be held April 28th and 29th, with the 1st day being at Bulan’s, and the 2nd being at Lincoln.  More info is available at each center. If you need a flyer, e-mail me at illianabowling@gmail.com and I can send you one back. I missed bowling in it last year, but will be rolling in it this year, will you?
Also, at the end of each year, each league usually elects new officers, and many are begging for people to run for office. I would encourage you to see if that is the case in your league and put your hat in the ring. Hey, even if you don’t win, you are a winner, as you volunteered to be a part of the group.  For your info, I will be listing each office that most leagues have in the next couple of weeks, and what their duties entail. Many of us do not realize how much our leaders really do.  This week, I will cover, possibly one of the most important, and busiest of all offices, the League Secretary.
The Secretary/League Official is responsible for:
·       Keeping minutes of all league meetings. Minutes should include the meeting date, time and location, names of those attending, and details of the decisions made.
·       Distributing a copy of the league rules, and approved prize list to each team captain and officer and posting of the league schedule or providing a copy for each captain.
·       Passing out individual USBC membership application cards to each league member as they join and collecting completed cards and membership dues.  Forwarding the completed membership application cards, membership dues and USBC league application to the respective USBC association secretary within 30 days of the start of the league. Membership card applications and applicable fees for additional members shall also be forwarded to the local association manager(s) within 30 days of receipt.
·       Posting or providing a current standing sheet, which includes a list of league bowlers and substitutes.
·       Reporting and submitting applications for awards as required by USBC rules.
·       Notifying league members of league and association meetings; and notifying the association of any changes in officers, schedules or bowling centers.
·       Turning in season-ending averages to the appropriate USBC local bowling association.
·       Providing the final league standings to the league treasurer.
·       Maintaining, writing and filing all league correspondence.
·       Furnishing the next league secretary with all records and materials.
NOTE: In leagues using computer and/or average service, the elected secretary remains responsible for all the duties specified in USBC Rule 102e.
An additional duty that we request that the secretary do, is to submit a report each week to us, so the members of each league get the recognition they deserve.
Next week, will be the Treasurer, even tho some leagues combine both this and the secretary.
In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Fred Fultz not only rolled 51 pins over average for a 156, but he also bowled 101 pins over his series average. Tony Dompe picked up both the 2-7, and 9-10 splits, while Lacee Bays got rid of the 3-10. The regular season for the Go Getters has now concluded, except for the 1st place roll off this coming Tuesday nite. The leaders for the 1st half, Always Late will roll against the 2nd half leaders, Wolf Creek Golf for the season champions. Good luck to both teams.  Judy Marriage knocked out the 5-10 split in the Tuesday morning ladies league in Westville.  In the DNA Karaoke League, Ruth Campbell and Marilyn Ruffner picked up the 3-10 split, June Bechtold picked up the 9-10 split and Ann Minnette picked up the 5-10 split.  In the Senior League, Bob Coburn bowled 54 pins over his game average with a 178 while Bill McDaniel was 70 pins over his average with a 215. Both Raymond Berlin and Judy Arnett converted the 5=6-10, Clarence Martin knocked out the 2-7, and Gerald Arnett made the 5-7 split disappear.
The Monday nite No-Tap league is reporting that Jeremy Randolph  once again had the high game for the nite, but just barely. Randolph had a 279 and a 779 series. J, and Jimmy Scruggs was only 4 pins behind with a 275, 70 pins over average and 677 series. J.R. Scruggs topped out with a 694 series, and Robbie Ketcherside finished up with a 690 series. The following bowlers rolled 50 or more pins over their averages: Terry Jones, 53 pins over for a 251, Finas Glenn, 52 over for a final of 244, Richard Morgan also was 53 over, for a 226 game, while Nancy Goodner was 87 pins above her average for a 243. Pam Jones converted the 2-7-10 split.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down. See you at the lanes.

March 13, 2012

Your columnist, Tuck Miller, was arrested this past Thursday at the Lincoln Lanes bowling center in downtown Danville. I was preparing to bowl in the Senior League, when Danville Police Commander Jane McFadden walked up to me, and stated she had to put me under arrest. I asked why, but the Commander put some hand cuffs on my wrists, and led me into the center’s bar area. She then told me Linda Engle had donated money to her for the Big Brother/Big Sister fundraiser to have me arrested.  I guess that was a good reason to be placed into cuffs. The fundraiser was on Friday nite and Saturday morning/afternoon. I was told that about 500 bowlers had bowled in the event, and approximately $16,000 had been raised thus far. No final tally has been reported to me. Hats off to all the bowlers and other volunteers who made this happen.
Some great action continues in the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Tony Dompe was the high bowler for the nite with a 244, 63 pins over average. However, Houston Keys rolled more pins over his average with 68 over, and garnering a total of 235. He was also 119 pins over average for a 620. Paula Beatty was 63 over for a 212, Dick Lamb, 61 over for a 211 and Bub Tiffin was 58 over for a 200. With 56 pins over average Gerald Arnett achieved a 210. Several bowlers converted some good split combos. Lamb picked up the 5-7, and the 2-5-7. Terra Hollar snagged the 5-10 split twice, while Harl Miller was content to knock the same split out once. Terry Moreman corralled the 6-10, while Mac McDaniel split apart the 3-10. Arnett picked up the2-7, while Tuck Miller picked up the same split twice. The Tuesday Morning Ladies leagues Martha Hargan, a 111 average bowler, bowled 62 pins over for a 173, 115 pins over her series average for a total of 448. Harriott Romoser rolled 60 pins over her 84 average for a 144. In the DNA Karaoke League, Ruth Campbell picked up the 3-10 split, Marilyn Ruffner picked up the 2-7 and the 5-7-8 split and Jenny Ovall picked up the 2-7-8 and 3-8-10 split.
In the Senior League, Rose Newell was 51 pins over game average, with a 189.  Clarence Martin, 50 pins over game average with a 163.Knocking out splits was the name of the game when Shirley Reynolds picked up the 2-7, 7-8, and the 4-7-5.  Meredith Stokes the 5-10.  Bill McDaniel the 2-10.  Linda Engle, 3-10 and John Gebhart, and the 5-6. Dot McDaniel smacked down the 4-7-10, Keith Carter had no problem with the 5-6-10, and Greg Miller picked up the 5-10.
Great bowling is the norm in the Monday nite Church No-Tap league Richard Davis rolled a high game of 297, 132 pins over his 160 average. He finished with a 718 series. I was actually bowling on Davis’ team that nite, and seen him roll this high score myself.  With each ball thrown, the tension was building. When he was in the 10th  frame, all other bowling stopped, and all eyes were upon him. First 2 balls in the 10th were a strike, then on the 3rd ball, he left a 3 pin split. Robbie Ketcherside finished 67 pins over average, and a 792 series. Joe Davis rolled a 752 series, while Jeremy Randolph bowled a series of 727. Sharon Craft topped out for a 626 series. The following bowlers were 50 or more pins over the game average: Mike Jett, 69 over with a 251. Kenny Smith, 100 over for  a 274. Krystle Smith was 69 pins over for a 213, while Jaunita Wrightsman finished up with a169, 54 pins over her average. Sharon Craft picked up the 5-7, while husband Larry split apart the 6-7.  Both U. Pete Williams and Rich Goben knocked out the 5-10.

February 21, 2012

A 300 game is supposed to be a rare event. Although some local bowlers are making it seem common place lately. In the Duprey Construction League this past week, David T. February 14, 2012

Only 35 days until spring, but as we all know, warm weather could start earlier than what the calendar shows it to be. Then again, we could actually have a winter, which I hope we do not.
As most of you have probably noticed, I have been keeping track of Jim Miller’s progress in the bowling community. I just received word he just rolled his 3rd 300 game. That makes two 300 games within 9 days. Other scores for his 795 series were 278 and 217. He had a split in the 5th frame of his 3rd game.
In the Alternate Saturday Night Mixed League at Lincoln Lanes, Dewey McClain picked up two 5-7 splits and the 7-9 split. Laiken Bratton was 58 pins over their 114 average for a 172, while Jarrod Swisher, a 131 average bowler, shot 81 pins over for a 212.
In the Tuesday Nite Go-Getters, Houston Key rolled 74 pins over average for a 239, while Paula Tate was 79 pins over her average for a 187. She also finished 81 pins over her 405 series average. Both Dot McDaniel and Terra Hollar picked up the 3-10 split, Sherry Castongue knocked out the 4-10, while Gerald Arnett split apart the 5-7 even further.
We understand the USBC may no longer recognize it, but this columnist and many others believe that you should be recognized on some achievements that they have decided to no longer acknowledge. Bill McDaniel did just that. He threw an all spare game in the Senior League. Congrats Bill. You have our recognition. In other Senior action, Joe Blagg was 53 pins over his game average, with a 233, 120 pins over series total with a 630. Bob Coburn was 52 pins over his game average, with a 174 while Sandy West was 53 pins over with a 182. Splits were plentiful as Jim Thomas, Phyllis Rutan and Rose Newell 5-10.  Ernie Harvey knocked out both the 7-8, and the 4-5-7. Laura Baird, and Bob Maxwell converted the 5-6 while Jim Thomas gave a demo on how to pick up the 5-7-9. Not to be left out, Blagg knocked out both the 3-6-10 and the 4-7;  .Once again, some great bowling in the Monday nite Church No-Tap league.  Jeremy Randolph seems to be unstoppable, as he rolls 2 highs games of 285 & 279. He ended up rolling a 805 series. The 285 game was 63 pins over his 222 average. Joe Davis was not a slacker himself. He rolled a 278, 63 pins over his 215 average for a final series tally of 785. Jeff Lane knocked out a high game of 277, which is 97 pins over his 180 average. Sharon Craft shot 61 pins over her 191 average for a 253. Sue Strong held out for a 675 showing. A strong showing. Rule of the week review:
Rule 9 – Bowling on the Wrong Lane
In league or tournament play, a dead ball shall be called and the player or players required to rebowl on the correct lane when:
a. One player bowls on the wrong lane.
b. One player from each team on the pair of lanes bowls on the wrong lane.
If more than one player on the same team bowls on the wrong lane in turn, all deliveries stand as bowled. Upon discovery, bowlers shall complete subsequent frames on the correct lanes.
In singles match play competition, where a player normally bowls two frames each time it is the player’s turn to bowl, and the player bowls on the wrong lanes, a dead ball shall be called and the player required to rebowl on the correct lanes, providing the error was discovered before the opposing player has made a delivery. Otherwise, the score stands as bowled, with all subsequent frames in the game bowled on the correct lanes.
Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down. See you at the lanes.
